OUR GOAL FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

At CityLab, our goal is to foster an appreciation for the sciences and the drive to go to college to pursue a career in the sciences in the students we teach. We do this by exposing high school students in the greater Los Angeles area to the rapidly developing world of biotechnology through hands on experience. By serving as mentors to our students, we aim to instill in our students an appreciation of and interest in scientific research, while educating them about various career options in science.

OUR EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS

In order to provide to the most fulfilling experience for the students we teach, our educational sessions involve bringing high school students to UCLA, where they learn fundamental concepts in biology and apply those concepts in a laboratory setting. Sessions are held on Saturdays and typically run from 9 AM - 3 PM. Our sessions include the following key components:
 

  1. One of our biotechnology modules, which currently include Forensics & DNA Fingerprinting, Vitamin C Titration, Sickle Cell Anemia, and ELISA.

  2. Laboratory experiments that help reinforce the concepts learned in the educational modules through an exciting, hands on experience.

  3. Our CityLab members serve as mentors to the high school students during the sessions, offering advice about college life as well as encouragement to pursue higher learning at a university after high school.

  4. A tour of the UCLA campus is also provided before the sessions begin.

Students arrive at UCLA, are given a tour of the UCLA campus by CityLab members.                      
Session begins; welcome and introduction to scientific method.
Students break into small groups for more intimate learning, attend presentations on concepts in the module.
Students enter lab, CityLab members guide them through various experiments.
Lunch 
Students watch the final act of the video module.
Fill out survey, return to bus stop, depart from UCLA.

OUR SESSIONS ARE FREE TO HIGH SCHOOLS

CityLab operates without charging any expenses to the participating high schools. High schools are not expected to contribute financially. These benefits including free transportation from the high schools to UCLA and back, as well as free lunch being provided during the session.
